Citizen TV’s Kimani Mbugua Injured After Altercation With City Askaris

A Citizen TV journalist, Kimani Mbugua, was on Monday morning assaulted by City askaris while he was at work.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, Kimani stated that he was attacked while recording the officers who were in the process of arresting a Boda Boda operator who had accessed the Central Business District (CBD) illegally.

“The officers were arresting a motorbike operator... it was dangerous...bike was on the move carrying a passenger and they pulled it from the back,” stated the journalist.

On noticing how risky the action was, Kimani took out his mobile phone to record while he waited for his crew to arrive for the day’s work at a quarter past six.

He further explained that other officers, who were standing by, came around and attacked him snatching his phone and deleting the video he had recorded

They took him, together with the motorbike operator, to the fire station where they assaulted him.

“I asked them if I was under arrest and they said that I was under arrest...and I told them I am a journalist...I was recording the video,” remarked Kimani explaining that the officers confiscated his phone.

While at the station, Kimani explained that the officers beat him up banging his head against the wall severally until he bled soaking his shirt.

“I tried to stop the bleeding using my shirt,” he continued.

The altercation took place at the intersection between Koja Mosque and Tom Mboya street and Kimani visited Nairobi Hospital for treatment shortly after appearing live on TV.
