Kipchumba Murkomen Defends Quality Food Debate as Senators Downplay Complaints

Senate Majority Leader Kipchumba Murkomen was at pains defending the National Assembly's quality of cafeteria food debate as members of the Senate dismissed the matter as insignificant.

Murkomen differed with Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei who appealed to the National Assembly to give more priority to other legislative matters other than debating on the quality of food.

The senators had been swayed away from debating the County Outdoor Advertising Control Bill which Cherargei viewed as of more importance than discussions on having good quality for MPs.

"The Bill we are discussing here is of greater significance to the Counties and parliament should give proper consideration to such a debate than discussing the quality of food at the cafeteria," submitted Senator Cherargei.

It is this remark that did not go well with Murkomen. He faulted Cherargei's views that appeared to be lessening the concerns raised by lawmakers over poor quality food at the cafeteria.

The majority leader defended the national assembly saying it was justified for the MPs to demand that better food was provided at the parliament cafeteria.

"By demanding quality food, the MPs are not seeking to spend more money from the taxpayers. It is important that everyone understands that all the expensive food we eat here is paid for from our own salaries," stated Senator Murkomen.

Makueni Senator had backed Cherargei's argument noting that to him, it appeared that about Ksh13 million had been spent by parliament "to get a menu from abroad."

Deputy Speaker Kithure Kindiki intervened defending Cherargei. Kindiki guided that the Senator was still in order given that he had only urged MPs to consider the Outdoor Advertising Bill as more significant.

"The Senator has not ruled out the significance of the debate on the quality of food in parliament. He only stated that the Bill we are discussing can be of more urgency and significance," held Kindiki.
