A light aircraft crashed into an electric post in Malindi injuring one person.
According to reports, the plane, a Cessna 152 failed to achieve the required altitude during take-off causing it to collide with the post in Furunzi area.
Eyewitnesses told journalists that the accident occurred at around 10:30 AM.
Confirming the incident, Malindi International Airport manager, Mohamed Karama stated that a pilot trainee who was commandeering the plane was rescued and taken to Tawfique Hospital for treatment.
He noted that the plane had only one occupant at the time of the crash.
“The aircraft which belongs to Kenya School of Flying was heading to Ukunda in Kwale County after taking off at 10.30 AM.
“The investigation team has already begun probing the cause of the accident," Karama stated.
He further noted that the rescue operation was conducted smoothly with the fire brigade collaborating with the police efficiently.
Describing the moments before the crash, Karama disclosed, “The pilot was trying to divert the aircraft towards a swamp after it failed to climb high before hitting an electric post and fell on a house."
A resident who was among the first at the scene recalled how they helped the trainee escape from the wreckage.
"I cut off the safety belt using a knife and pulled him out... 15 minutes later, an ambulance arrived and the victim was rushed to the hospital," he was quoted by Citizen Digital.
