FGM Forced Ann Ngirita to Seek Asylum in Germany

NYS scandal suspect Ann Wambere Ngirita once sought asylum in Germany over the fear of undergoing Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).

Media reports indicate that in 2014, Ngirita was living in Germany as an asylum seeker "running away from female genital mutilation".

In January 2014, Ngirita told a German publication Märkisches Medienhaus, that she was scared of undergoing the rite.

"For more than a year, she has been living in a transitional home for asylum seekers," the publication wrote.

Ngirita was by then reportedly aged 24 and had been allowed to share her small room at the transitional home with her boyfriend.

However, during the NYS probe, Ngirita told detectives that she had travelled to Germany "for an academic course".

Ngirita told the investigators that she had worked with a company whose name she could not recall and earned a monthly salary of €1,200 (Ksh141,546).

As at the time of the interview with Märkisches Medienhaus, her asylum application was still running.

In statements recorded with police during the NYS investigations, she sat her Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination in 2008.

In 2010, Ngirita opened a shop which closed down the same year. But in 2015, she registered two companies — Annwaw and Ann Wambere Wanjiku Investments - that she used to obtain Ksh59.8 million from the NYS for supplying air.
