Donald Trump to Name Kenya as Anchor Country in African Policy

Kenya is, on Thursday, set to be named by United States President Donald Trump’s administration as an anchor country for its new African Policy.

The move is reportedly an attempt by the US to inhibit the growing power by other countries like China and Russia in Africa.

Other countries expected to be named alongside Kenya are Somalia, Libya and Mali.

The White House strategy is expected to name several countries as anchors for the U.S. strategy, and experts close to the administration expect the list to include Kenya, a longstanding U.S. ally,” reported NBC News.

US will be seeking to grow its economic relations with the continent as well as continue with its counter-terrorism efforts.

Quoting sources from Washington, the US media outlet further revealed that Trump was also looking to prevent other states such as North Korea and Iran from making inroads in Africa.

The state’s initiatives is reported to contain efforts to enhance its relations with Kenya and other African countries which it views as regionally important.

Experts have warned that China had invested billions into Africa and used the economic might to boost its security interests.

Currently, Kenya is the third highest African country indebted to China with a loan amounting to Kshs980 billion.

It comes after Ethiopia which owes China Kshs1.37 trillion and Angola which has the highest debt standing at Kshs4.28 trillion.

China has built the Standard Gauge Railway and numerous Kenyan roads since the partnership between the two countries began.
