City Hall Executive Sues Governor Mike Sonko for Defamation

City Hall Executive, Newton Mungala, has filed a lawsuit in a Machakos Court accusing Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko of defaming him.

Newton, a suspended deputy director of legal services, sued the governor demanding Kshs30 million in compensation.

He accused Sonko of calling him a land grabber, a phrase he claimed was demeaning and had been published by numerous dailies in the country.

He further claimed that barely a month after the Governor had assumed office, he sent goons to remove him from his City Hall offices by force.

Upon demanding proof of the allegation, the goons served me with a letter instructing me to go on compulsory leave,” stated the executive.

He further divulged that the team had been given strict instructions to eject him on grounds that he had grabbed public land.

He also explained that the suspension letter did not indicate the reason and duration for his leave.

The suspended official was ejected from the office on September 26, 2017.

In his lawsuit, Mungala also listed Daily Nation as a respondent.

He claimed that the press statements Sonko had released to publications were aimed at injuring and lowering his self-esteem which the right thinking members of the society had regarded him.
