NTSA Suspends Night Travel for 10 City Saccos

The National Transport and Safety Authority has imposed a suspension of night travel licences for some public service vehicles.

The 10 saccos have been suspended over traffic violations during the Christmas and New Year celebrations.

Those affected by the month-long suspension are vehicles belonging to Mbukinya, Ongata Rongai, Kenya Poa, Unified Poa, Nazigi, Prestige, Nawasuko, Latema, and Kibureti, Lucky Baba Dogo, and Marimba saccos.

The authority recorded 3,146 deaths on the road as of December 30, compared to 2,875 people who died by the same date in 2017.

“Statistics indicate night travel poses a high risk, and the majority of the accidents occur during this period,” commented NTSA Director Francis Meja.

The transport regulator thanked the Judiciary for suspending licences of drivers who were charged with drunk driving country-wide.

Those drivers will have to undergo refresher training and re-testing before their licences are restored.

The police are also conducting a crackdown to impound unregistered vehicles bearing plates inscribed as X-GK, X-KA, and X-Diplomatic.

The authority has clarified that vehicles bearing such number plates are not registered and therefore operating illegally.

NTSA also took note of transport operators who had hiked fares during the festive season with the help of traffic police.
