Evaline Towett, a 66-year-old widow who lost her husband in an accident along Tenwek Hospital road in Bomet County, fixes potholes on the same road to avoid further casualties.
Speaking to the Star, Towett also revealed that she lost her only son as a result of a road crash.
“I no longer want to see more people dying like my son because there are some things we can do to prevent it,” she lamented.
Furthermore, she divulged that her motivation to repair the dilapidated road came about after listening to a sermon from a preacher about the wise men who offered gifts to baby Jesus.
“I heard the sermon and it touched me. We were taught about offering presents to the needy and so when I returned home, I thought about my best gift and this idea came to my mind,” she commented.
According to Towett, who works as a missionary in Pokot, she was doing the job especially for the patients who had rough time accessing the largest hospital in the area.
Nonetheless, she noted that she was only doing her civic duty after witnessing a lot of people dying on the road.
“We must help the government by playing our roles and doing what is right,” she stated.
She had witnessed a pedestrian being knocked down along the route by a boda-boda rider who was trying to avoid hitting a pothole. The man later succumbed to injuries at the Tenwek Hospital.
Moreso, she regretted that the area leaders hadn't acted to rectify the state of the three-kilometre stretch of road.
She, however, appealed to the leaders and Infrastructure CS James Macharia to consider repairing the road to prevent more accidents on the road.
Motorists are appreciative of the work she is doing.
