The government has given a Chinese investor 14-day ultimatum to demolish an upcoming hotel on the shores of Lake Naivasha.
The notice by National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) directed the owner of Boffer Farm, where the hotel is located, to demolish it or face legal action.
Nakuru county NEMA director Antony Saisi revealed that the building was constructed illegally.
He intimated officers visited the hotel that is still under construction and ordered its owners to promptly bring it down.
“We have issued the management of the hotel with a 14-day notice to demolish the structure failure to which we shall start legal action against the owner,” Saisi noted.
Saisi stated the owner had done an environmental impact assessment without involving Nema.
The notice comes after several NGOs raised concerns over the ongoing construction of the facility located a few metres from the lake.
The director further ordered hoteliers, flower farmers and other investors with unapproved structures around the lake to remove them.
The CEO of Lake Naivasha Water Resources User Association, Enock Kiminta, has raised alert over upcoming structures around the lake.
“Currently, we have hoteliers and flower farms who have encroached on lake land and we should be seeking ways of evicting them so that we can save this water body,” he stated.
