The Mombasa Governor stated: "I am grateful for the privilege of having studied under your (Raila's) political tutelage.

"You have taught us courage and resilience in the face of difficult circumstances. And we have learnt to make peace where peace is necessary.

"Happy Birthday Raila Odinga. May you see many more. And in the years to come, may you continue to change the country for the better," Joho concluded.

His son Raila Junior tweeted, "Have a happy birthday dad. As usual this year I got woken up like every year by Jalango Mwenyewe looking for your number to wish you happy birthday. Next year he should save it".

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino tweeted, "Happy birthday HE Raila Amollo Odinga, the next president of Kenya".

Businessman Jimnah Mbaru posted: "Happy birthday Raila Amollo Odinga. You have been a great source of inspiration and symbol of determination for many in this continent. One day Kenyans will know you always meant good for Kenya".

Earlier in the morning, Raila had cut a red-velvet cake decorated in white and gold with the inscription "Happy Birthday Baba".
