Ferdinand Waititu's Bus Stop Project Cancelled by Court

Kiambu governor, Ferdinand Babayo Waititu, on Monday suffered a setback after the Environment and Land Court in Thika stopped him from turning part of a four-acre piece of land in Makongeni, Thika Town, into a bus park.

On January 4, the Postal Corporation of Kenya (PCK), which owns the land, had gotten an order from the court, barring the building of the bus park until the case was heard and determined.

However, on Saturday, Waititu's administration launched the bus stop, naming it Makongeni Bus Park. They levelled the ground and installed street lights.

According to reports, it is alleged that last December, Waititu and his supporters invaded the prime land several times and promised to establish a bus park on it to reduce traffic congestion.

Reports further claim that immediately after its launch on Saturday, about 30 matatu saccos began operating from it.

However, on Sunday morning, they were met by a contingent of anti-riot police who prevented them from using the park.

Speaking to the Nation, Kiambu County Road and Infrastructure Executive Juliet Kimemia claimed that they acquired the land correctly.

"They (tenants) approached us asking for a partnership to help turn the property into a bus park because they did not have the capacity. Posta will continue getting its dues until the leases expire," Kimemia asserted.

Nonetheless, PCK maintained that its contracts with the tenants did not allow them to sublease the property. They added that the tenants could not build a bus park on that particular land.
