Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko's Cabinet in Crisis

Nairobi governor, Mike Sonko, is being faced with a cabinet crisis due to his leadership style after nearly all of his county executives resigned.

Nairobi county cabinet executive in charge of Education, Janet Muthoni Ouko, quit on Monday citing that she wanted to pursue other interests.

However, according to new reports, Ouko claims the move was as a result of constant intimidation, insults, and threats from the governor.

Speaking to Citizen TV on Tuesday, Janet revealed how the executive wing of the county was being run in a chaotic manner.

“It is not fine to have people living under fear of blackmail, EACC, arresting, locking up offices, its chaos…,” she commented.

“Like now we have two executive members remaining, the governor should be pre-occupied with the question, is he unique,” Ouko divulged further.

Nevertheless, Speaking in Mombasa on Wednesday, Sonko refuted Ouko's claim accusing her of failing to account for millions of bursary funds meant for poor students.

The governor claimed that Ouko, together with other senior officers in the county's education ministry, had conspired to stifle the funds.

Meanwhile, Sonko assured Kenyans that investigations were ongoing, adding that he already had solid evidence that would lead to the suspects being arrested.

Furthermore, the governor pledged to announce the appointment of more competent leaders by Friday including his deputy.

On January 12, 2018, barely six months after the elections, Sonko’s deputy governor Polycarp Igathe resigned citing failure to earn the trust of his boss.

In the following months, Sonko settled on controversial lawyer Miguna Miguna as his deputy, a decision that was thwarted by the county assembly.

Months later, several CEC’s were sent packing or suspended among them Veska Kangogo, Danvas Makori, and Emma Mukuhi.

Devolution CEC Larry Wambua’s fate remains uncertain. This, only leaving three CECs, Allan Igambi of Finance, Charles Kerich in the Lands docket and Mohammed Dagane of Transport in office.

In October 2018, the Nairobi County Public Service Board put out a notice calling for applications for five positions of CECs.
