Gatundu MP Moses Kuria has threatened to institute court proceedings against a local publication that claimed he had resigned.
Minutes before the MP held a press conference on Thursday, The Star, a local online news site broke the story that he had tendered his resignation to the Speaker of the National Assembly Justin Muturi.
“I have called a press conference through official parliament channels and these [insults] from The Star go on reporting their own things. In all due respect, what kind of journalism is that? Anyway, that's how people become rich from damages,” the lawmaker stated.
In a different story, the publication stated that they had been tipped by a source in Parliament.
The story, which was also carried by many popular stations, turned out to be false after the presser.
In a video seen by Kenyans.co.ke, the lawmaker, who was aware of the spreading rumour, asked journalists from the local paper to leave the presser.
“Who is from Star? Is it possible you [sic] could leave my press conference?” he requested.
Kuria then softened his stance after the reporter explained that he was not the one behind the false story.
“I have nothing against you, I just wanted to reiterate the point,” he told the journalist.
During the presser, Kuria also alleged that he had been receiving death threats following his criticism of President Uhuru Kenyatta and had reported the matter to the Director of Criminal Investigations George Kinoti.
