Error in Raila Odinga’s Speech on African Growth Exposed After Fact Check

An error has been spotted from a speech that the AU envoy Raila Odinga made over African economic growth.

Delivering the talk at the University of Nairobi (UoN), the former Prime Minister claimed that out of 10 fastest growing economies in the world, six were from Africa.

From the 90s, there has been growth in our continent. By the World Bank account, two years ago, for the last 10 years, out of the 10 fastest growing economies in the world, six were on the African continent,” stated Raila.

However, an analysis of the World Bank report he quoted exposed the misinformation.

According to the report, only two African countries, Ethiopia and Djibouti, were featured in the 10 fastest growing economies for the period between 2007 and 2017.

In the report, Nauru, an island, had the fastest growing economy that averaged at 16.6% followed by Monaco at 12.2% and Ethiopia at 10.2%.

The other states that made the top 10 included Turkmenistan, Qatar, China, Myanmar, Uzbekistan, Djibouti and the Lao Peoples Republic, in that order as reported by The Standard.

While at the UoN event, Raila also launched an attack on the Kenyan Judiciary blaming it for slowing down the fight against corruption.

Comparing the system with that of other countries, Raila claimed that Kenya’s was not active enough noting other countries dealt with the corrupt fearlessly.

Raila was, in October 2018, appointed as High Representative for Infrastructure Development in Africa.
