Karungo wa Thang'wa Quit TV Job Over Dreadlocks
Former radio presenter Karungo wa Thang'wa has come out to tell reporters about how he once chose his dreadlocks over a TV job.
During an interview with The Star, he narrated that he had passed auditions to read the news at a top media house but quit after they asked him to shave his hair.
The former journalist, who is now Kiambu County Executive in charge of Roads and Transport, attributed the decision to his youthful exuberance because he was only 25 at the time.
He had come from China where he had been working as a lecturer.
Karungo started growing his dreadlocks when he was in the Asian country because he couldn't find a good barber to cut his hair.
"Although I had a Job on Radio, I wanted to look for greener pastures. That is why I went for a TV interview," he told The Star.
"After the condition they gave me, I asked myself if I cut the hair, I will look photogenic? I had to forego the job and keep my hair," he recalled.
He kept the locks for 10 years before he decided to get rid of them.
Speaking about a student who had been kicked out of school because of dreadlocks, he termed it as discrimination.
"Nobody should be discriminated against because of their culture or religion," he stated.
