Nairobi Couple Given 2 Weeks to Explain Kshs340 Million Wealth

A former Nairobi County Government official and his wife have been given 14 days to explain the source of their wealth.

Stephen Osiro and his wife Caroline Obwa told the court on Monday that they needed more time to file a defence as their witnesses had not recorded statements.

EACC established that the couple had accumulated over Kshs340 million in five years.

The commission told the court that Stephen's Kshs 90,000 salary was not enough to amass the wealth within that period of time.

Lawyer Judith Shamalla, representing EACC told the court during a past hearing that Osiro had deposited Ksh 77 million in his child's bank account.

Investigations further revealed that he also made a Kshs53 million deposit in his wife's account.

Osiro has previously worked as a Treasurer at both Kisumu Municipal Council and Nairobi City County.

EACC accused him of using the above named positions to embezzle funds.

In November 2018, the court barred Osiro from transferring or selling properties believed to be the proceeds of crime.

The matter will be heard by Justice Hedwig Ong'undi on February 11.
