Ugandans were on Monday treated to a terror scare after alerts indicated that Violet Kemunto, aka Khadija, had entered the country armed with explosives and bullets.
Text messages, audios, and social media alerts were circulated by unknown people claiming Al-Shabaab terrorists were planning to hit Kampala in two weeks.
According to reports, the alerts described Kemunto as a dangerous person, who killed without mercy and was wanted by the Kenya police.
Kemunto is believed to be the wife of Ali Salim Gichunge, a terrorist affiliated with Al-Shabaab, who was reportedly shot dead after attacking the Riverside Dusit Complex in Nairobi.
The alerts further alleged that her last phone records were traced to Uganda.
However, Uganda police spokesperson Fred Enanga dismissed the claims and urged the public to disregard the alerts.
“Police will only release information, including terror alerts, upon accurate and honest acknowledgement of any real threats," he declared.
He further asked Ugandans to carry on with their business without fear as there were no specific threats in their country.
Enanga assured the citizens that security agencies would carry on with their surveillance and share information with their regional counterparts.
Meanwhile, Kemunto has become one of the most wanted women in the world with investigations suggesting that she might have escaped to Somalia.
