A fire break out in Maina slums, Nyahururu town on Wednesday morning left nearly 40 families in distress after burning their houses.
The fire is said to have emanated from one of the timber houses at around 2am, destroying property of unknown value.
Calling upon the County Government of Laikipia to train the youth on fire fighting, residents complained that the fire incidences had become rampant.
“We are insisting that the County government should take about 10 to 20 youth and train them on fire fighting so that before the fire fighters arrive, they will have saved a few things,”a resident appealed.
No one was injured during the incident. However, a couple of families lost their property despite the youth and fire fighters efforts to save them.
The residents further urged the government to expand the roads so that fire engines can respond with ease.
Area Chief Susan Waithaka said that although there was immediate response to distress calls, the fire spread out quickly with lack of proper access roads to the scene hampering access by the fire fighters.
This comes a few days after another fire broke out in Nyeri where 40 houses were razed down. The area is believed to be dominantly resided by students from Nyeri National Polytechnic.
The cause of the fire in this incident was not officially established, however, residents believe it was caused by an electric fault.
"We had a problem with electric power yesterday. The lights kept turning on and off, even destroying a few of our electric appliances,” a resident commented.
