A police officer in Nyeri is in trouble for allegedly stealing a confiscated vehicle at Nyeri Police Station that had been rendered unroadworthy.
According to reports, Constable Gabrielle Matata was arrested after he was linked to the vehicle that was stolen Wednesday.
The car had been confiscated on Tuesday and the driver, Kelvin King'ori Waithanji, released on bail set to appear in court on Wednesday.
“The driver was arrested and released on free bond view and asked to proceed to court on Wednesday. At about 11pm, the vehicle was discovered missing from the station yard,” a report filed at Karatina police station stated.
It is before Kingori was arraigned in court, that the police officers realized the vehicle was missing.
Matata, who was on disciplinary leave, is said to have stolen the vehicle in the company of other people that police are still looking for.
“Two separate subordinate disciplinary committees were instituted to inquire the offense in respect to Simon Ndeti (OCS Karatina) and Geoffrey Gitonga (S.O. Traffic) for deploying a police officer on disciplinary leave,” the report further stated.
The paradox that needs to be solved is why Matata was on duty while he was supposed to be on disciplinary leave.
According to the report, four police officers of other ranks will be tried in the disciplinary proceeding for being negligent in performing their duty and a general inquiry will be opened by the DCIO Karatina to come up with further appropriate remedial measures.
