Seven students from Nyamanga Mixed Secondary School in Homa Bay County were believed to have started a fire, on Saturday, which burnt the school dormitory and destroyed property.
The incident which started at about 3am forced some students to jump out of the facility's windows but no injuries were recorded.
Reports indicate that the students, teachers and members of the public tried to put out the fire in vain.
According to Parents Teachers Association (PTA) chairman Dan Nyakwana, the seven were suspended last week for sneaking out of school.
"The suspects went to a disco matanga at a village next to the school. They had to be sent home for disobeying the rules,” he stated.
Nyakwana disclosed that one student was spotted trying to get back into the compound at night three days ago.
“The person had a jerrican which we believe contained petrol,” he stated.
Nyakwana also claimed that one of the boys had threatened the head boy and other officials for snitching on them, vowing to launch an attack soon.
Ndhiwa divisional police commander Dishon Chadaka announced that they had launched investigations into what happened.
“We appeal to those with information on what might have happened to share it with police," he stated.
