Deputy President William Ruto’s staff are yet to yet to be paid their monthly allowances since August 2018 due to budget cuts that have hit his office.
Members of his security detail, drivers and press team are among those yet to receive their per diem for the past five months.
According to Sunday Nation, the delay in payment has been occasioned by acute budget cuts, with fingers pointed at Ruto’s detractors.
The budget for the DP’s office is in the hands of State House Comptroller Kinuthia Mbugua.
The last per diem to be paid to staff who travel with Ruto was paid out when he visited Marsabit County on August 31, 2018.
According to a high-placed source, the government owes staff in the office between Ksh200,000 to Ksh1.2 million each, depending on one’s job group.
The new development has reportedly led to scaling down of Dr Ruto’s tours across the country.
He has also been forced to cut down on the delegations to his Karen home.
However, Ruto’s spokesman David Mugonyi refuted the claims that there were existing budgetary constraints.
“Those are lies, total lies. It is not true at all,” Mugonyi responded when asked about the unpaid dues.
