Suspect in Carol Mwatha’s Case Linked to Deya’s Miracle Baby Scandal

Betty Akinyi, a suspect in activist Caroline Mwatha’s death, had been jailed in 2005 over a scandal involving stolen babies.

Akinyi, the owner of the clinic where police claim a botched abortion by the human tights activist happened, helped register births of “miracle babies” who were stolen from their mothers.

At the time, she was believed to be a nurse and was operating a clinic called Gatheca Estate Nursing and Maternity home.

Akinyi pleaded guilty in helping controversial Bishop Gilbert Deya’s wife, Mary Deya, to register the births of the stolen babies, who were handed to infertile couples.

Records show Akinyi served for six months at the Lang’ata women’s prison.

Akinyi was among the six suspects arraigned at the Makadara law courts, in connection with the death of Mwatha.

The other suspects are Michael Onchiri, Richard Ramoya Abudo, Alexander Gitau Gikonyo, Stephen Maina and George Achieng’ Tabitha.

The clinic owned by Akinyi in Dandora is known as New Njiru Clinic.

Director of Criminal Investigations, George Kinoti, stated investigators believe Mwatha died at the facility before the body was transferred to City Mortuary on February 7, 2019.

“It is believed that an abortion procedure was procured by the owner of the clinic namely Betty Akinyi Nyanya and one purported Michael Onchiri alias Dr. Mike,” Kinoti cited.

Pastor Deya’s case is still pending in court.
