EACC Speaks on Its Officials Robbing Man Ksh442K in Bank

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), on Thursday, responded to claims that its officials were involved in robbing a man Ksh449,000 while in a bank.

In a statement seen by Kenyans.co.ke, the commission refuted the claims that the officers were robbers explaining that the alleged victim was actually a fraud whom they captured in a sting operation.

According to the commission, the man identified as Dominic Borchigei was a part of an operation that illegally collected money from IDPs to the tune of Ksh 5,000 and Ksh 9,000 as 'fees' for allegedly facilitating the IDPs' payments by the government.

"The IDPs were being paid a sum of Ksh 50,000 and upon payment, they would be asked to give out a share of the money to the officials," EACC CEO Twalib Mbarak conveyed.

It was on Wednesday that a team of EACC officers received information that the IDPs' were giving out Ksh 9,000 to the said officials inside the bank.

The team also established that the said officials had been allocated some desk inside the bank where they were collecting the money from the IDPs upon payment.

"The EACC sleuths conducted a sting operation at about 3pm and arrested Borchigei inside the banking hall and escorted him to the bank manager's office, where a search was conducted in the presence of the Bank manager and a sum of Ksh 99,050 was recovered and recorded in the inventory which was signed by the EACC officer, the Bank Manager, and the suspect," the statement read in part.

Twalib added that the entire process was recorded on video and the clips would constitute part of the evidence to be used in the prosecution of the case.

The suspect was escorted to Kapsabet Police Station where he was booked for further processing.
