Senior Assistant Director of Medical Services, Mrs. Georgina Wangui Kamunge, was arrested on Friday in a sting operation at Mathare Hospital soliciting bribes.
The undercover exercise was carried out following numerous complaints sent out to the Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission (EACC) by firearm owners accusing her of demanding for bribes during the ongoing firearm owners vetting exercise.
“EACC has today arrested the Senior Assistant Director of Medical Services, Mrs. Georgina Wangui Kamunge on allegations of bribery demands,” read an excerpt of the commission's statement.
Ms Wangui was accused of demanding bribes from gun owners who were seeking a psychiatric evaluation at Mathare Hospital.
The EACC statement revealed that each firearm holder was required to pay additional Ksh5,000, with the hospital officials declining any requests for receipts of the money paid.
It was during their undercover operation that the commission’s officers were able to validate the accusations and arrested Dr. Wangui.
The psychiatric evaluation exercise at Mathare Hospital has since been suspended until further notice.
The evaluation is part of the mandatory fresh vetting process that was decreed by the Firearms Licensing Board (FLB) chairman, Charles Mukindia.
The re-evaluation process was triggered by Interior Cabinet Secretary, Fred Matiangi’s directive on December 5th, 2018, in reaction to reports that the firearms registry process was tainted with corrupt dealings.
