Kenya Met Predicts Heavy Rainfall, Thunderstorms in Nairobi, Nakuru, Kiambu & Other Regions This Week

The Kenya Meteorological Department has forecast that rainfall in most parts of the country is expected to continue over the next seven days, with some areas, including Nairobi, likely to experience isolated heavy rainfall.

In the forecast published on Monday, covering Tuesday, March 18, to Monday, March 24, the Met department predicted morning rains in parts of the Highlands East of the Rift Valley (including Nairobi County), with night showers in some areas.

The region, which includes Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka-Nithi, and Nairobi counties, is expected to experience morning rains in a few places.

According to Kenya Met, rainfall is expected to occasionally spread to several areas during the first half of the forecast period, from Tuesday to Thursday.

“Afternoon showers and thunderstorms are likely to occur over several places during the first half of the forecast period, reducing to few places thereafter,” notes part of the forecast.

The forecast indicates temperatures in Nairobi will reach a maximum of 28°C with lows of 12°C. In Thika, maximum temperatures will hit 30°C with night temperatures of 15°C.

The Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin and the Rift Valley-Nandi, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Siaya, Busia, Baringo, Nakuru, Trans-Nzoia, Uasin-Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, West-Pokot, Kisii, Nyamira, Kericho, Bomet, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori and NarokCounties are also expected to be wet over the seven days.

According to the forecast, these areas are expected to receive morning rains in some places, with afternoon showers and thunderstorms anticipated between today and Friday. Rainfall will also continue at night in a few locations.

The forecast indicates that areas in the southeastern lowlands—Machakos, Kitui, Makueni, Kajiado, and Taita-Taveta—as well as the inland parts of Tana River County, will experience morning, afternoon, and night showers.

According to the Met Department, thunderstorms are likely to occur in some areas.

In Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale counties, rainfall is expected throughout the day, with morning, afternoon, and night showers.

The counties of Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo should prepare for morning rains as well as afternoon and night showers and thunderstorms between Tuesday and Friday.

Despite the rainfall, average daytime maximum temperatures of over 30°C will be experienced in the Coast, northeastern, and northwestern parts of Kenya.
