Francis Atwoli Threatens Mass Action Over Rampant Corruption

COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli is adamant that it's the turn of Kenyans to deal with corrupt leaders themselves.

The Unionist spoke on Wednesday during the 30th anniversary of the Pan-African Unions-Trade in Nairobi, which had former Prime Minister Raila Odinga as the guest of honour.

Atwoli was confident that Kenyan workers had the power to fight corrupt leaders who are not arrested and jailed by the government.

He was confident that workers would be in their right to organize mass action with the intention of sidelining the leaders, many of whom are left to roam free in the country.

Atwoli directed his message to President Uhuru Kenyatta indicating, “If some of them will not be put in jail, I can tell you, your Excellency, that citizens are going to take action.”

The COTU boss also reminded the country that corruption was going a long way in derailing current and upcoming development projects while creating a culture and environment that only supports the rich at the expense of the poor.

"We cannot sit and watch our children languish in poverty, they cannot afford a meal, they cannot go to school when a few individuals have sets and sets of choppers or helicopters at their disposal. We will rise, organise ourselves and face them," warned Atwoli.

He, however, implored the president to comprehend that he has the support of Kenyans in the war against graft.

“I want to tell the President of this country that workers are behind him in the fight against graft,” indicated Atwoli.

Additionally, the COTU Secretary General assured that his fight against corruption was unwavering and that he was ready to be hanged before he sees one of them become the president of Kenya.

He indicated, "Somebody said he wants to be president and people around him, and all corrupt cases link up with him. I know if he becomes a leader, I am an elder, let him hang me first."

The president has in the recent past told the corrupt state officials to change from their ways or they will pay dearly for every coin they steal from the public.

"To those engaging in fraud and abuse of office, please listen to me keenly, you can run but you cannot hide.

"We will catch up with you, and make you pay dearly for every coin stolen. The broom that is sweeping across the nation will soon find its way to your doorsteps," communicated President Uhuru.
