Fire Guts Houses at Mukuru Slums

Hundreds of residents of Mukuru slums in Nairobi were left homeless on Saturday after fire razed down their houses.

According to The Star, the fire might have been caused by an electrical surge.

Five people are feared dead following that incident that also caused the destruction of property worth millions of shillings.

Firefighters from Nairobi County Government had a difficult time putting out the fire because of the narrow paths which made the area inaccessible.

This incident comes barely a fortnight after 46 houses were reduced to ashes in the same slum.

The slum chairman David Kiarie revealed that the fire started around 1 am when three young men who were sharing a single room disagreed.

Reports indicate that the youth fled without raising an alarm when fire engulfed their room.

Looters took advantage of the situation to cart away goods.

In 2018, two children were burnt to death at Mukuru slums when fire razed down their house.

Their mother had forgotten to put out the candle when she left the house.
