Uhuru Receives His Firearm License & New Generation Smart Card

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Friday received his new generation firearm license at State House.

Announcing the news on his social media, the Head of State was required just like any other Kenyan with a firearm to have his piece certified afresh.

"Today I received my new generation firearm license smart card and certificate from the Firearms Licensing Board after undergoing the due certification process and obtaining a unique identification number," he tweeted.

This move is in line with a directive issued by Interior CS Fred Matiang'i for all private firearm holders in the country must be registered afresh by March 18.

In the new regulations, the Firearm Licensing and Control Board developed a new microchip card, which will have all the details of a firearm holder.

The gun owner must produce the card when asked to do so by the police.

“Everyone who holds a firearm in Kenya must be registered afresh by March 18. They will be issued with a card that has a microchip that has all the details of the gun owner.

"When for example, the police commander in the region requires you to produce this card because you own a firearm, you must do so,” Matiang'i stated in January, 2019.

He explained that the decision was a matter of national security following lapses in the oversight of gun ownership and use by private citizens.
