Govt Announces New Registration Guidelines for Newborns

The government, through the Interior Ministry, on Saturday, issued new National Integrated Identity Management System (NIIMS) registration guidelines for newborns.

Taking to social media, National Government Communication Centre (NGCC) revealed that the newborns would get the NIIMS number, popularly known as Huduma Namba, at birth after their parents register them.

Once the children attain age six, continued NGCC, they would then have their biometric taken using the number similar to that they were assigned at birth.

The state further explained that after the registration, the children would use the number on all their documents, including IDs, throughout their lives.

"Parents will register newborns who'll only get a NIIMS (number). But after turning 6, the child's biometrics (which hadn't developed at birth) will be taken.S/he will be given a Huduma Namba similar to the NIIMS one given after birth. This is the (number). they'll use on all docs even the ID," posted NGCC.

Interior Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho further took the opportunity to explain the benefits of the Huduma Namba.

"Huduma Namba has numerous benefits. For instance, it will allow the Government to bring order, enhance planning and ensure that there is prudence in the manner in which money is utilized." stated Kibicho.

On March 6, NGCC announced that the rollout of the NIIMS number would commence on April 2, 2019, a change from the March 15 date set earlier.

The state also revealed that 50,000 youth had been hired to carry out the exercise and that they would pocket Ksh 1,500 every day for the entire period.

NIIMS pilot project kicked off on Monday, February 18 in 15 selected counties with the launch held in Nyandarua County.
