The family of Deputy President William Ruto’s late pilot Captain Mario Magonga has refused to bury the burnt remains it was given pending DNA test results.
Captain Mario died alongside four Americans when his chopper crashed in Lake Turkana on the evening of March 3.
His family members stated they cannot identify the remains they were given.
They have requested the US embassy in Nairobi to help investigate what brought down the helicopter and resolve the puzzle of Mario’s body.
“The bodies of the four American tourists were positively identified but it was very difficult to tell the remains of the fifth person as that of Capt Mario.
“The remains were charred beyond recognition,” Mario’s uncle wrote to the embassy on March 8.
Mario’s sister Gladys Magonga mentioned that sample of the remains was sent to US for DNA analysis.
“There was no body. The rescue team found some bones, whose DNA the government pathologist could not ascertain,” she told the Sunday Nation.
The kin also wants detectives to help unravel the nature of business of the Americans, the individuals that the pilot last spoke to and who ordered him to fly at night.
“Investigations are on though the family has expressed doubts if that was the captain’s body.
They want answers to why only their kin was burnt beyond recognition in the accident,” the letter addressed to US ambassador Kyle McCarter read.
On Friday,Ruto visited and condoled with family at their Karen home.
He remembered the deceased as an accomplished, disciplined and reliable pilot who loved his Job.
"Captain Magonga was charitable, intelligent and had impeccable credentials. He will be sorely missed," Ruto tweeted.
