For the better part of Monday, a billboard bearing a sexual slang was shared across social media platforms.
The picture in question was that of the alleged billboard erected along Waiyaki Way near the University of Nairobi.
The messaging on the advertisement is what got Kenyans talking many expressing their displeasure at the lengths marketers went through to capture people's attention.
However, when reports of the billboard got the attention of Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, he sent a team out to establish the authenticity of the inappropriate display.
"I have personally sent my officers to confirm whether the billboard bearing the sexual slang 'tumekud****' exists. This is what we found out," he posted on Facebook.
Posting photos of the billboard showing "Tumekudunga' (we've given you), Sonko clarified that the initial messaging was a photoshop of the actual advertisement."
Poking fun at the situation, Kenyans noted that it was possible the county government might have switched the billboards overnight as was the situation with the lion statue at the roundabout metres away from where the advertisement was placed.
"Kama uliweza kubadilisha simba usiku, herufi mbili zitakulemea aje mkubwa? (If you were able to replace the lion at night, two words on a billboard can't be a challenge)," one user quipped.
A spot check by Kenyans.co.ke on Tuesday morning showed that the billboard had the word "Tumekudunga" which is slang for 'we have given you' on it.
Earlier on, KFCB CEO Ezekiel Mutua took to social media expressing his disgust over the billboard message.
"In the name of creativity, advertisers are sexualising everything under the sun. I hope this poster being circulated in social media is fake. If it is real, the County Government officials who licensed the billboard should revoke the license immediately. This is unacceptable," he wrote on Monday.
However, Multichoice Management confirmed to the KFCB boss that the poster circulating on social media was fake and that there was no campaign they were running.
