Embakasi west MP George Theuri has denied any involvement in tax evasion after the DCI confiscated a car he had gifted his wife.
DCI on Tuesday impounded two luxury vehicles one belonging to Cynthia Wanjiru Gitonga, Theuri’s wife.
A statement from the Directorate stated that the vehicles were nabbed after it was verified that they had been registered as semitrailers in order to avoid taxation.
Detectives yesterday confiscated two vehicles- one belonging to Ms. Cynthia Wanjiru Gitonga & another to Mr. John Mwangi. The vehicles were declared semi trailers hence evaded duty through an organized scheme that claims they were manufactured at a fictitious company in Mombasa. pic.twitter.com/TSDc9q2ebv
Speaking to Standard Digital on phone, Theuri admitted that the vehicle in question indeed belonged to wife, but distanced himself from the tax evasion allegations
The lawmaker had bought the car in 2018 for his wife on her birthday at a cost of over Ksh4 million.
“The vehicle was bought from a showroom and prior to purchasing it, a search showed that everything was alright,” the flamboyant lawmaker claimed.
The Embakasi West MP joins other public officials that have seemingly been duped by unscrupulous businessmen.
Eugene Wamalwa, CS Devolution, in 2016, had his Range Rover seized after it was found to have tax arrears of over Ksh6.5 million.
It was later discovered that the said vehicle had also been registered as a lorry when it was imported.
In another case, two vehicles, a Range Rover and Mercedes Benz, using motorbike registration numbers (KBN 591A and KBG 330E) were recovered from the premises of an official of the Nairobi City County. Two other pairs of Number Plates (KCR 985U and KCR 196P) were found in the boot of the Mercedes.
