Kenyan Narrates 12hr-Torture by Tanzanian Authorities

The Kenyan entrepreneur who was arrested last week by Tanzanian authorities gave a chilling narration of his ordeal.

Speaking to The Star, Mohamed Bashir claimed to have been severely battered for over 12 hours as he was being transported to Arusha for questioning.

The businessman described the 104Km trip to Arusha as 'hell on earth' as he was tortured and beaten in its entirety.

His arrest brought the Namanga border to a standstill as Kenyans took to the streets and blocked the Nairobi-Arusha highway over what they deemed to be an illegal arrest.

Mr Bashir revealed that he had been abducted by a seven-member elite Tanzanian force christened

'Usalama wa Taifa' as he was closing up his wholesale shop last Tuesday.

He was then bundled into a car and ferried to Arusha for further questioning regarding possible terrorism and human trafficking links.

"As we crossed the border into Tanzania, the officers started raining blows on me as others used pistols to hit my knees, forehead and back," he disclosed.

Upon their arrival in Arusha, Mr Bashir claimed to have been taken a further 20Km more inland to the special units' headquarters and placed in a poorly lit room for questioning.

"They asked me to identify myself, and I told them. As soon as they heard that, I received a slap across the face," Bashir divulged.

He went on to claim that they continued beating away at him stating that he was lying and that his name was Jamal, a fact he categorically denied as he begged for mercy.

Mr Bashir has since been released after the Tanzanians established that they had arrested the wrong man.

However, Kajiado Central sub-county Police Commander - Issa Mohamed revealed that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) were still investigating him to establish if there is any truth behind the terror and human trafficking links.
