Kenyan Movie Nominated for Top Hollywood Award

A Kenyan short film has been nominated for a prestigious award in Los Angeles, USA.

Shoto was nominated for the Best New Media award in Best of New Film Makers Los Angeles(NFML) awards.

The movie's title is derived from the nickname of a character who is a matatu driver plying the Umoja route.

The announcement was made on Sunday, April 7.

The US Embassy in Kenya sponsored the film which follows the life of Shoto and in the processes showcasing Kenyan matatu culture.

Azali Ishmael, one of the filmmakers for this movie, could not hide his joy when he learnt of the nomination.

He took to his Instagram account to post his excitement.

Tonight I want to take this opportunity to first thank God, thank the stories found team: James Martin, Bud Simpson, and Evie Maina in conjunction with the US Embassy Nairobi, not forgetting the AMAZING AMAZING students who took a 3 week online course and 1 week Crush Ground/practical course, to make this a successful project together with our main cast SHOTO,” he posted

The winners in different categories of the NFML are chosen by a 14-person jury made up of professionals in the film industry in Hollywood.
