Former Attorney General Charles Njonjo has outlived all his former colleagues to be the only surviving member of Kenya's Independence Cabinet.
The 99-year-old former powerful minister on Monday successfully registered for the National Integrated Identity Management System (NIIMS) in Kabete, Kiambu County.
Njonjo stated that the government's plan to roll out the consolidated information system was long overdue.
He argued that the Huduma Namba will help tame fraud and make accessing essential government services easier.
First Lady Margaret Kenyatta also registered on the NIIMS platform on Monday at State House, Nairobi.
She led other State House staff including Comptroller Kinuthia Mbugua, the Chief of Staff in the First Lady’s Office Constance Gakonyo and Deputy Comptroller George Kariuki.
Others included President Uhuru Kenyatta’s private secretary Jomo Gecaga and Aide-De-Camp Lt-Col Colonel Timothy Stelu Lekolol.
President Kenyatta has urged all Kenyans to ensure they show up for registration even as some areas experience low turn out.
In Migori County, only about 30,000 people had been registered one week after the launch by President Kenyatta on April 2.
According to Suna East sub-county Deputy County Commissioner Daniel Mutiso, they expected to have about 150,000 people registered after the first week of the launch.
Some of the challenges hampering the exercise are mechanical and internet problems especially in areas that border Kenya and Tanzania.
