Kenyans to Get New 01** Mobile Prefix From 07**

Kenyans are about to be introduced to a new mobile number prefix if the Communication Authority of Kenya (CAK) approves Airtel's proposal.

The 07* which referred to as a National Destination Code is used by many to identify calls from within the country.

Techweez reported that the telco has already exhausted its  0730 to 0739, 0750 to 0756 and 0785 to 0789 prefixes.

A trusted source revealed some of the new expected codes are 0100, 0101, 0102.

A communication expert told Kenyans.co.ke that the industry regulator holds the final word on the approval request.

The new codes will be able to accommodate the extra number of subscribers the firm intends to attract in the future.

According to the latest report from the industry regulator, Airtel Kenya has a market share of 23.4 percent which was up 11 percent compared to the previous quarter.

In 2019, the telco announced a merger with Telkom and that the resultant organisation would be called Airtel-Telkom.

The merged company will be chaired by Telkom CEO, Mugo Kibati while Airtel Chief Executive, Prasanta Sarma, will be appointed Chief Executive Officer.

“It is common practice within the ICT industry to conduct exploratory conversations; to assess the market for areas of synergy, co-operation, and partnership, with the intent of giving customers greater value and superior experience,” Kibati told Business Daily.
