DCI Seize Stolen Relief Food, 3 Arrested

DCI detectives manning a roadblock in Matuu, on Thursday, intercepted a Mercedes truck that was loaded with over 600 bags of sorghum headed for Nairobi.

The food, which was packed in 50kg bags, was supposed to have been distributed to refugees at the Dadaab refugee camp.

“The goods were meant for refugees at the Dadaab, but they were diverted to Nairobi for resale,” DCI revealed on Twitter.

Detectives went ahead to reveal that three people were arrested in the process.

Abdijabar Shiekh Alio aged 21, 31-year-old Muktar Manoor and Suleiman Ibrahim Siat aged 45 were apprehended in the operation.

This comes after at a time when Kenya is facing a food crisis with most parts of the northern regions grappling with the effects of drought.

The sorghum was said to have been donated by the World Food Program to try and help alleviate the effects of drought and famine in the refugee camp.

A group of Kenyans responded to the news with most of them urging the detectives to keep up the good work.

Some claimed that the trucks that were used to transport the food to the refugee camp always wait for the distribution to end and start re-buying the food from the recipients at low prices for resale in Nairobi at higher profits.

The three will be charged with being in possession of unaccustomed goods contrary to section 200 d (iii) of E.A.C customs management act of 2004.
