Deputy President William Ruto, on Friday, directed the Education CS Prof George Magoha and his ICT counterpart Joe Mucheru to formulate a framework for the promotion of local film industry within a month.
Speaking during the closure of the Kenya National Drama Festival State Concert at Kibabii University in Bungoma County, Ruto explained that the industry had the potential to create 600,000 job opportunities but it was being under-exploited.
“We can create wealth out of the creative economy. But that chance is slipping away because of lack of clarity and confusion on what we need to do.
“Why are we exporting great opportunities to other countries with the kind of talents we see? Ladies and gentlemen we have to fix this and do so as a matter of agency. The entertainment industry has the potential to employ between 300,000 to 500,000 Kenyans,” he stated.
He commended the teachers who trained the teams that took part in the festival and promised to host them at his Karen residence for a round-table meeting.
On his part, CS Magoha stated that he would go to extra lengths to ensure that the quality of education offered by institutions was at par with global standards.
“Judiciously, we shall give you value for money. I’m going to ask my people that all I need for you to do is to be available at work.
“I’m going to visit schools and I don’t want to be welcomed. I want to come quietly like a submarine because that’s how I’ll know if children are being taught as they should be taught,” he added.
The education CS promised to ensure the successful implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
“I want to know that CBC is taught the way it ought to be taught. I’ll monitor the 100 percent transition policy so that when there’s a problem I’m going to tell you promptly what the issue is,” he divulged.
