Distressing Images at KNH as Burnt Children Sleep on Floor [VIDEO]

Investigations by the Nation has revealed the harrowing conditions that patients at the Kenyatta National Hospital burn unit go through.

A team from the publication that visited the facility earlier in the week found children recovering from burns sleeping on mattresses spread across the floor.

Their parents and guardians shared the little space available as they fed the young ones during lunchtime.

Furthermore, any visitor who wanted to access the ward located on the fourth floor of the hospital was required to remove their shoes.

On top of that, there was no space between the mattresses as visitors were forced to walk on the mattress to reach the children.

For instance, a ward that was initially supposed to hold 20 children now has more than 100 patients with only three nurses to attend to them.

According to KNH board member  Dr Stanley Kamau, most burn patients at the hospital were abandoned children who had stayed at the facility for more than one year.

Earlier in the month, Austin Njoroge, a two-month-old baby was forced to undergo a surgical operation to amputate his leg and hand at the same facility.

Baby Austin's parents - Peter Gitonga and Leah Waithira, told the Nation that his complications began after an allegedly botched BCG vaccination.

The visibly sad parents asserted that the surgery was necessitated by negligence on the part of the medical staff during Austin's vaccination.
