Deputy President William Ruto on Sunday left Christians in confusion after he quoted a Bible verse, Mathew chapter 6 verse 35, which does not exist.
The DP was speaking at the Citadel Salvation Army Church in Kakamega where he was responding to COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli’s remarks, that he (Ruto) would not be on the presidential ballot in 2022.
“Tumeambiwa na waganga na wachawi ati mtu fulani atakua kwa debe na mtu fulani hatakuwa kwa debe ujue mahali Kenya imefika.
(We have been told by witches and sorcerers that some people will be on the ballot and others will not be on the ballot. Note where we have reached as a country),” he began.
“Lakini hata na wao tunaomba muwaombee wajue ya kwamba Mathayo sita thelathini na tano, watafute kwanza ufalme wa Mungu.
(We are requesting that you pray for them so that they know Mathew Chapter 6 Verse 35 says they must first seek the Kingdom of God…,” he stated.
The actual verse that Ruto meant to quote was Mathew Chapter 6 Verse 33 which states, “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well”.
Interestingly, Matthew Chapter 6 ends at Verse 34, hence Verse 35 doesn't exist.
Ruto’s remarks came in the background of Atwoli's statement which elicited a string of reactions from the DP’s camp, with some accusing the 69-year-old workers' rights champion of plotting to kill Ruto.
"The threat by Atwoli that WSR will not be on the ballot come 2022 shouldn't be taken lightly. The late Hon Muchai and Atwoli disagreed on COTU leadership, by election time he was for sure not on the ballot," commented Kericho Senator Aaron Cheruiyot.
National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale told the trade unionist that he was too old to be engaging in a war of words with other leaders.
