Twist as Heavy Rain Cripples Transport in Turkana

Commuters and vehicles were stuck as transport along Kakuma-Lokichogio road in Turkana County was crippled following the heavy rains experienced on Monday night.

Residents and visitors plying the route on Tuesday morning were forced to seek alternative ways to get to their intended destinations as a section of the road was completely flooded.

Reports indicated that the current situation was as a result of River Nakoyo bursting its banks and flooding the entire road.

River Kawalase and Nakoyo have in the past caused wanton distress during periods of heavy rains when they always break their banks and cause havoc on a massive scale.

Incidentally, at least 10,000 Turkana residents were displaced while 5,592 houses were swept away following heavy rains exactly a year ago, as river kawalase, river Karach and several others burst their banks.

Most of the roads in the county were rendered impassable during last year's long rains, with two trailers recorded as having been swept away by river Turkwel at Kainuk bridge.

The current floods come barely weeks since reports came out indicating that the county was ravaged with one of the worst droughts in decades.

The drought had left countless livestock dead due to lack of water and graze, while thousands of residents faced starvation.
