NYS Recruits Beat 2 Civilians to Death Over Stolen Phone

Two local residents of Homa Bay County,  Hesbon Nyamwea and Geoffrey Onjoki, were reportedly beaten by National Youth Service (NYS) cadets to a pulp leading to their death over a stolen phone.

Reports by Citizen Digital revealed that the two deceased men were suspected to have stolen a mobile phone belonging to a senior NYS officer.

The late Mr Nyamwea and the unnamed senior officer were allegedly indulging in some liquor at a local watering hole on Saturday night prior to the phone being stolen.

Once the highly-charged NYS trainees learned that their senior officer had lost his phone, they made their way to the suspect's homestead armed with crude weapons which they used without restraint against the two.

They then frogmarched the suspects back to their camp, Lambwe, in Suba South, in order to defend themselves against the accusations.

However, the recently deceased person's former employer, John Nyangweso, claimed that the two weren't granted a fair chance to defend themselves but rather beaten senselessly like animals to their death.

County commissioner, Irungu Macharia and his counterpart, Esther Seroney (County Police Commander) made way to the Lambwe NYS camp on Monday to carry out further investigations regarding the matter.

In a related case, a police officer, Joseph Mauti, was accused of shooting and killing Dominic Oyunge on April 11, 2019 at Maximum Bar in Itumbe Market, Kisii.

The officer allegedly walked into the bar and started threatening that he would shoot someone and when the bar tender asked him what had gotten him to a point of contemplating murder, he pulled the trigger killing him on the spot.

Mr Mauti has since pleaded not guilty to the charge of murder, with the case set for mention on May 6, 2019.
