Teen Who Stole Ksh100K Cows to Pay Fees Touches Father's Heart

A Form three dropout has touched the heart of his father after he was nabbed with three cows valued at Ksh100,000 with the aim of selling them to raise school fees.

Amos Kipkorir Bett, 19, a dropout from Ngariet Boys School, stole the cows on February 17 this year from his father Christopher Koech in Kapchemibei village in Sotik.

The Star reported that it was the boy's mother who raised an alarm over the missing cattle and was subsequently busted with the cattle at Kaptemwo trading centre.

Bett was subsequently arrested and arraigned in court but informed the magistrate that he was only doing that in order to be accepted back to school.

Principal magistrate Bernard Omwansa ordered a probe into the claim that the boy was indeed a student at the mentioned school and that he owed the institution Ksh77,000 school fees.

Probation officer Peter Koskey, after carrying out the requisite investigations, confirmed to the court that it was indeed true.

“Indeed the name is as indicated and his admission number is 4128. He is determined to go back to school…he is a first offender and he neither abuses alcohol nor smokes a cigarette,” stated Koskey.

The report further revealed the headteacher of the institution, who confirmed that Bett had been a student there, was ready to admit him back as long as he cleared his fee arrears.

“The principal of the Ngariet School welcomes him back so long as he clears the arrears indicating he has no issues of indiscipline against him,” read part of the statement.

Touched by his son's action, Koech vowed to support his sheer determination of going back to school and did not object to his non-custodial sentence.
