IG Mutyambai Flies in New Chopper Amid MPs' Objection

Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai was on Thursday spotted flying in the new Italian Agusta utility helicopter 5Y-DIG.

In a video seen by Kenyans.co.ke, the new Inspector General wears his headsets as he enjoys his flight.

The helicopter is used to transport police officers from one place to another.

However, in mid-April, the House National Security Committee asked the new Inspector General of Police to reject the aircrafts.

"We have advised the new IG not to accept the aircraft until after questions raised over their procurement are addressed," Kiambaa MP Paul Koinange told People Daily.

The committee also expressed concern over why the ministry went ahead and procured helicopters without approval from parliament.

The MPs had also stated that they wanted a special team to investigate the police airwing.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i  launched three brand new police helicopters AW139s and one A12 at Wilson Airport, which were supposed to help beat back a surging crime wave.

However, it emerged that from the word go there were tell-tale signs that should have rang alarm bells about the new planes.

Two of the three police helicopters bought at a combined cost of Ksh 4.6 billion have never left the ground and are just wasting away at the airport.

The National Police Service has been unable to get insurance for the two planes, which means that they cannot be allowed to fly within Kenya’s airspace.
