Raila Attacks Judiciary for Punishing Corruption Whistleblower

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has hit out at CJ David Maraga-led judiciary after it ordered a corruption whistleblower to part with Ksh27 million for reportedly tainting an ex-minister's image.

The High Court in Kenya on Thursday ordered former Permanent Secretary for Governance and ethics and anti-corruption whistleblower, John Githongo, to pay Chris Murungaru Ksh27 million.

In a sit-down with The Standard, Odinga, who was not impressed by the ruling, accused the judiciary once again of being the weak link in the fight against corruption.

“How can a whistle blower be penalised for helping the country to save public funds. This is a mockery of the law.

“In future, people will be scared to whistle blow if the trend witnessed in the Judiciary’s determination of such matters is anything to go by,” he stated.

He further claimed that the judiciary was lenient especially for offering bail terms to criminals at the center of murder cases.

He, however, cautioned members of the public not to take the advantage to make false remarks about another party due to Witness Protection Act but made it clear that Githongo's case was already in public domain and that details were clear.

“In this matter of Githongo, I am sorry to pronounce myself that the matter was in public domain and it was abundantly clear that he helped prevent a scandal.

“Who does not know of the Anglo Leasing Scandal that nearly brought down former President Kibaki’s regime?” he questioned.
