Govt Officials Arrested For Stealing County Property Worth Millions

Four government officials from Nandi county were arrested over the weekend after being found in possession of construction materials worth millions of shillings.

Pieces of iron sheet, tonnes of cement and nails meant for the construction of 60 Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) centres were discovered stashed away in the homes of the suspects.

The nabbed officials were identified as Education Chief Officer, David Sang, ECD Director, Julius Too, ECD Project Manager, Eliud Mosbei and Procurement Officer, Joseah Kogo.

"Police are yet to determine the total worth of the recovered property. However, investigations are ongoing, with the arrested suspects aiding us in getting to the bottom of this grave matter," an excerpt of a report at the Nandi Police Station revealed.

Reports by the Standard stated that Mr Mosbei and Mr Kogo were arraigned at the Kapsabet court on Friday after they were found in possession of 400 bags of cement and 637 pieces of corrugated iron sheets.

According to records from Nandi County Governor, Stephen Sang's office, Ksh234 million had been set aside and partly used in the purchase of materials to be used in setting up the schools in the 2017/2018.

However, not a single classroom has been constructed following the weekend crackdown.

Nandi Police Commander, Thomas Ngweiyo and his colleague from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Sammy Mukeku revealed that most of the missing construction materials had been sold off as well as used for private benefit by the suspects.

The arrests came hot on the heels of the impeachment of Nandi County's Education Executive, Valentine Chumo by the national assembly, following accusations of embezzlement of the ECD funds after she failed to account for the disbursed funds.

Commander Ngweiywo revealed that they were after 5 more government officials linked to the construction materials heist, adding that they would be presenting them in court on Monday.
