Sonko Receives Ksh200M Gift From UK

Nairobi Governor, Mike Mbuvi Sonko, has received Ksh200 million, which will help the County deal with disaster management.

The money, which has been approved by the Global Challenges Research Fund, will be injected in Nairobi's 'The Hub' Project.

"In Nairobi, we often face droughts, earth's tremors,  flash floods, terrorism, disease and epidemics and everyday threats like air pollution and the collapse of buildings," Sonko stated.

He added that the money would go a long way to save the lives of Nairobi residents.

The Governor was speaking during the launch of 'The Hub' Project in Nairobi.

During the launch, King's College, London Professor of Geography Mark Pelling stated Nairobi is the African representative of the network that has received funds for disaster preparedness.

Nairobi is one of four cities around the world that got a share of the money. The other cities include Kathmandu in Nepal, Quito in Ecuador and Istanbul in Turkey.

"It is a strategically important project for the UK," Pelling cited.

Sonko also stated that floods during long rains put pressure on people and threaten the prosperity, quality of life and general wellbeing of Nairobi residents.

He added that his government would ensure that no life is lost to disasters, especially those that can be avoided.
