The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has released a list of new regulations that are to guide the bodaboda business in the country.
Speaking on Thursday, Joseph Kamau, an NTSA official, while presenting bursaries to train cyclists, he declared that the law requires riders to wear yellow helmets.
“The law requires all bodaboda riders to wear yellow helmets because they are more visible,” Kamau stated.
He also revealed that the riders will be required by law to have a valid license in addition to the two yellow helmets.
Their motorcycles should also have a number plate as well as two reflective vests.
The transport regulator also announced that the reflective vest should be printed with an indication of what Sacco the rider belongs to.
Kamau went on to inform the riders that they will be only allowed to carry one passenger at a time.
When it came to the issue of carrying children, the transport authority declared that only children below the age of 12 years will be allowed to ride with an adult or a load not exceeding 20 Kgs.
According to Daily Nation, bodaboda riders will not be allowed to carry luggage that blocks the rearview mirrors or exceed 2 meters in height from the ground.
Kamau also announced that the riders will have to register for Saccos, adding that this would help the authorities to track down the operators who help criminal elements.
NTSA also revealed that modifying the motorbike was illegal and that those who have installed noisy exhausts will be arrested.
The riders were also urged to obey traffic rules for their own safety.
