Juja Road Blocked as Protesting Children Left to Roam [PHOTOS]

Students of St. Theresia Primary School along Juja Road, Nairobi, abandoned class and took to the streets to air their grievances over road safety concerns.

The students dressed in full school uniform were chanting seasoned protester songs like Haki Yetu which led to the blocking of the road.

Reports reaching our desk indicate that the children were demanding the construction of a footbridge and speed bumps along the busy road.

The children have to cross the road every morning and evening when going to school and back home, yet there is no footbridge.

The speeding drivers pose an obvious risk to their lives and the children thus leading to the protests.

The protesting children had been left to roam along the busy and dangerous road by their teachers seemingly without any proper organisation.

They caused a major traffic snarl-up on the road with many motorists arguing that they could easily be knocked down by a moving car.

The protests highlighted by netizens evoked different emotions from Kenyans on Twitter.

One netizen wrote, "Juja road is impassable. Children from St. Theresa girls are picketing diverting any car or motorcycle demanding bumps on the road children are truly the future."

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko got wind of the protests and took to Facebook to respond through his official channel.

"Following recent concerns on the state of Juja road I have directed my Roads and Transport department to immediately construct bumps on Juja road.

"I have also ordered the county engineers to put road markings on the busy road to reduce cases of road accidents along Juja road."
