Doctors and nurses in Kirinyaga County have issued a three-day strike notice after one of the doctors was attacked by snakes in line of duty at Kimbimbi Sub-county Hospital.
It is alleged that there has been a rise in the number of rodents at the hospital due to poor sanitation.
Gor Goody, the Secretary-General of the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union (KMPDU) Central Kenya, stated that the workers were working in inhumane conditions.
He added that attempts to contact Kirinyaga Governor, Anne Waiguru had turned futile.
People Daily reports that the medics have been facing challenges since Waiguru sent home 346 casual labourers in April.
On Saturday, an expose aired by Citizen TV revealed the unpleasant state of Kerugoya County Referral Hospital.
The hospital recently laid off 200 casual workers, including cleaners. This resulted in blocked toilets, unwashed linen, rotting garbage, and undisposed hospital waste.
Water shortage at the facility made the situation dire by exposing patients and hospital staff to infectious diseases.
Kenya Union of Clinical Officers (KUCO) Kirinyaga Chairman Paul Mwangi revealed that two nurses at the facility had been diagnosed with Hepatitis B.
"There are several nurses who are experiencing diarrhea. Last week, two nurses were diagnosed with Hepatitis B," he stated.
